BADEF Welcomes Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change for El Niño Discussions

On Tuesday, 22 September 2026, BADEF welcomed

Mr. Hussein Ali Haji, Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, to its office in Nairobi, Kenya.

The meeting focused on the developing El Niño situation in Somalia and the environmental, humanitarian, and socioeconomic challenges that changing weather patterns may present to communities across the country.

During the engagement, discussions centered on the importance of understanding the potential impacts of El Niño and strengthening dialogue around climate preparedness, resilience, and responses to climate-related challenges affecting Somalia.

Somalia remains highly exposed to climate-related shocks, including droughts, floods, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and environmental degradation. These challenges can have far-reaching consequences for communities whose livelihoods depend on agriculture, livestock, water resources, and other climate-sensitive sectors.

The meeting therefore provided an important opportunity for BADEF and the Deputy Minister to exchange perspectives on the climate situation and consider the importance of continued engagement among government institutions, civil society organization’s, development partners, and communities in responding to emerging environmental challenges.

Mr. Hussein Ali Haji’s visit also provided an opportunity to strengthen dialogue between BADEF and Somalia’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change on issues related to environmental protection, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

As climate variability continues to affect communities across Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa, timely information, preparedness, institutional cooperation, and community engagement remain important components of efforts to reduce the impact of climate-related emergencies.

BADEF remains committed to supporting constructive dialogue and initiatives that contribute to stronger, more resilient communities and promote sustainable responses to environmental and climate-related challenges.

The meeting concluded with a shared recognition of the importance of maintaining dialogue on climate issues affecting Somalia and supporting efforts that strengthen preparedness and resilience among vulnerable communities.
