BADEF

Safeguarding

Tell us. We would rather know.

BADEF works with children, with survivors of gender-based violence, and with families who have very little room to refuse. That places an obligation on us, and it gives you the right to tell us when something is wrong.

If it is urgent

Emergencies first.

If a child or an adult is in immediate danger, contact the local police or emergency services first. Do not wait for a reply from us.

Tell us afterwards, so that we can act on our side as well. Our office hours do not cover every hour of the day, and a message to us is not a substitute for emergency help.

What to report

Anything that put someone at risk.

Tell us if you have seen, experienced or been told about any of the following. It does not matter whether you are a programme participant, a member of staff, a partner or a member of the public.

01

Harm to a child or an adult at risk

Physical, sexual or emotional harm, neglect, or exploitation involving anyone we work with or anyone who works for us.

02

Conduct of our staff, volunteers or partners

Behaviour by someone working for or alongside BADEF that falls below the standard we set, whether or not it happened on a project site.

03

Sexual exploitation or abuse

Any use of a position with BADEF to obtain sexual favours, or any sexual activity involving a child or a programme participant.

04

Misuse of funds or aid

Aid diverted, sold, or made conditional on payment, sexual favours or political support. Fraud, bribery or theft of programme resources.

How to reach us

Four ways, whichever is safest for you.

By email

Write to info@badef.org. Put the word Safeguarding in the subject line so it is recognised straight away.

Through the form

Use our contact form and choose Safeguarding or complaint as the subject. Say so in the first line of the message as well.

By phone

Somalia: +252 61 5888383 or +252 1 201132.
Kenya: +254 703 808 080.

On WhatsApp

+254 703 808 080. Useful if you are somewhere that email is difficult to reach.

You do not need to prove anything before you tell us. Report the concern and let us look into it.

When you report

What helps, and what you can ask for.

It helps if you can tell us what happened, where and roughly when, and who was involved. If you do not know some of that, report it anyway.

  • Say how you want to be contacted. Tell us whether email, phone or WhatsApp is safest for you, and whether there are times you cannot be reached.
  • Tell us if anyone should not see your report. If your concern involves a member of our staff, name them so your report is not routed to the person it is about.
  • Say what you want to happen. Some people want an investigation, some want the behaviour stopped, some want only to put it on record. Tell us which.
  • Ask us questions. You can ask who will read your report, what we will do with it, and what we will tell other people. We will answer.

We do not penalise anyone for raising a concern honestly, including our own staff. Our published policies are collected in the resources library.
