BADEF

Institutional funding

Delivery in districts where access is the first problem.

BADEF is a Somali development organisation working with poor and marginalised communities in Lower Juba and Lower Shabelle. We deliver as a partner and as a sub-grantee, and we report the figures the field produced.

Nine institutions have funded our work, supported it, or delivered alongside us in Somalia, among them the European Union, UNICEF, FAO, USAID and the Somalia Humanitarian Fund. Four things tend to matter most to the people who sign the grant.

01

Districts that are hard to reach

BADEF works across seven states and territories of Somalia and in neighbouring countries in East Africa. Published programme records cover Lower Juba (Afmadow and Dhobley) and Lower Shabelle (Marka and Kurtunwarey), with child protection work in Mogadishu and Baidoa and an office in Kenya. Programmes run where the need is, including places where access is the first problem to solve rather than an afterthought.

02

Figures produced by the field

Participants and the relevant line departments evaluate each project on the ground. Regional offices consolidate the monthly returns into quarterly reports, so the numbers a funder receives are the ones the field produced.

03

Design set by the community

Projects emanate from the needs a local community expresses, in their own order of priority. That is why conflict management is built into agriculture, health and education work rather than run as a separate programme.

04

Capacity that stays local

Self-reliance is the stated exit condition. Structures, committees and skills are meant to remain after a grant closes, which is what makes the next project cheaper to run.

Due diligence

The documents assessment teams ask for.

Our published material is grouped so a due-diligence checklist can be worked through in one visit. If a document you need is not there, ask and we will send it.

Assessment teams usually want registration papers, audited accounts and safeguarding policies before anything else. Write to us with the list your process requires and we will return it in one pack rather than piecemeal. For programme results in plain language, the impact stories show what individual projects changed.

Tell us what you are funding.

Tell us the fund or facility you are working with, the districts or sectors in scope, and your timeline. The subject is set to Partnership or funding so it reaches the right people. If you would rather send a due-diligence pack request, say so and we will reply with the documents attached.
