Qorax camp in Dhobley District, Jubaland State, houses people who have already lost their homes. What they have not lost is the ordinary need for medical care, which a displacement camp is rarely equipped to meet.
During the commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week 2022, BADEF ran an education and support programme alongside a free mobile clinic at the camp, in collaboration with Somalia’s Ministry of Health and Human Services. The theme that year was Step Up For Breastfeeding: Educate and Support.
Breastfeeding support carries unusual weight in a displacement setting. It depends on no cold chain, no supply line and no permanent building, and it protects an infant at the point where displacement is most dangerous to them. Bringing the clinic to the camp removes the last obstacle, which is the journey itself.
