Most maternal and newborn deaths occur in the hours around delivery, and most are preventable by staff trained to recognise and manage complications as they arise.
In Afmadow District, Lower Juba, BADEF ran training in Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care for frontline health staff. The curriculum covered gender integration, including a dedicated module on gender-based violence.
Training is the part of a programme that does not leave when the funding does. The clinicians trained here continue to work in the same district, which is why capacity building runs alongside service delivery in BADEF programmes rather than after them.
